Concentration Bounds from Parallel Repetition Theorems
This thesis contributes to the study of parallel repetition theorems and concentration bounds for nonlocal games and quantum interactive proofs. We make the following contributions:
- A lemma that is useful for converting parallel repetition theorems (bounds on the probability of winning all instances of a nonlocal game which is being repeated in parallel) into concentration bounds (bounds on winning a certain fraction of the instances).
- Exponentially-decaying concentration bounds for two-player games on the uniform distribution and k-player free games, against quantum strategies.
- A proof that given a quantum interactive proof system with parameters α (the probability with which the verifier can be convinced to accept when they should accept) and β (the soundness error), as long as α > β, both the soundness error and completeness error can be reduced exponentially by repeating the protocol in parallel and requiring an (α + β)/2 fraction of the repetitions to be won. Our result requires a log-factor more repetitions than are necessary in the classical case
Emerged Coupling of Motor Control and Morphological Development in Evolution of Multi-cellular Animats
A model for co-evolving behavior control and morphological development is presented in this paper. The development of the morphology starts with a single cell that is able to divide or die, which is controlled by a gene regulatory network. The cells are connected by springs and form the morphology of the grown individuals. The movements of animats are resulted from the shrinking and relaxation of the springs connecting the lateral cells on the body morphology. The gene regulatory network, together with the frequency and phase shifts of the spring movements are evolved to maximize the distance that the animats can swim in a given time interval. To facilitate the evolution of swimming animats, a term that awards an elongated morphology is also included in the fitness function. We show that animats with different body-plans emerge in the evolutionary runs and that the evolved movement control strategy is coupled with the body plan
Mathematics difficulties in extremely preterm children : evidence of a specific deficit in basic mathematics processing
Background:
Extremely preterm (EP, <26 wk gestation) children have been observed to have poor academic achievement in comparison to their term-born peers, especially in mathematics. This study investigated potential underlying causes of this difficulty.
Methods:
A total of 219 EP participants were compared with 153 term-born control children at 11 y of age. All children were assessed by a psychologist on a battery of standardized cognitive tests and a number estimation test assessing children’s numerical representations.
Results:
EP children underperformed in all tests in comparison with the term controls (the majority of Ps < 0.001). Different underlying relationships between performance on the number estimation test and mathematical achievement were found in EP as compared with control children. That is, even after controlling for cognitive ability, a relationship between number representations and mathematical performance persisted for EP children only (EP: r = 0.346, n = 186, P < 0.001; control: r = 0.095, n = 146, P = 0.256).
Conclusion:
Interventions for EP children may target improving children’s numerical representations in order to subsequently remediate their mathematical skills
Managing soil fertility in organic farming systems
Complex relationships exist between different components of the organic farm and the quantity and quality of the end products depend on the functioning of the whole system. As such, it is very difficult to isolate soil fertility from production and environmental aspects of the system. Crop rotation is the central tool that integrates the maintenance and development of soil fertility with different aspects of crop and livestock production in organic systems. Nutrient supply to crops depends on the use of legumes to add nitrogen to the system and limited inputs of supplementary nutrients, added in acceptable forms. Manures and crop residues are carefully managed to recycle nutrients around the farm. Management of soil organic matter, primarily through the use of short-term leys, helps ensure good soil structure and biological activity, important for nutrient supply, health and productivity of both crops and livestock. Carefully planned diverse rotations help reduce the incidence of pests and diseases and allow for cultural methods of weed control. As a result of the complex interactions between different system components, fertility management in organic farming relies on a long-term integrated approach rather than the more short-term very targeted solutions common in conventional agriculture
Delivering a childhood obesity prevention intervention using Islamic religious settings in the UK : What is most important to the stakeholders?
Ten per cent of the childhood population in the UK are of South Asian (SA) origin. Within this population, over 40% are living with overweight or obesity. The majority of SA children are Muslim and attend Islamic religious settings (IRS) daily after school. Because of their reach and influence, IRS may be an appropriate channel for obesity prevention initiatives. We conducted 20 in-depth interviews with parents of children attending IRS, 20 with Islamic leaders, and 3 focus group discussions with 26 managers and workers of IRS in Bradford and Birmingham. Topic guides were developed, interviews and focus group discussions were audio-recorded, transcribed, and analysed thematically. Muslim parents, Islamic leaders and IRS staff were supportive of the delivery of obesity prevention interventions for children using IRS. Participants identified important components of an intervention including: Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as a role model for healthy lifestyle; healthy diet, physical activity, and organisational behaviour change within IRS. Participants suggested that Islamic narrative on healthy diet and physical fitness could increase delivery uptake. Staff showed willingness to conduct physical activity sessions for boys and girls. Barriers for the intervention delivery were poor funding systems and time constraints for staff. All participant groups thought that it would be possible to deliver a childhood obesity prevention intervention. Interventions should be co-designed, culturally and religiously sensitive and combine the scientific guidelines on healthy living with Islamic narrative on importance of healthy diet consumption and physical activity
Born to learn: The inspiration, progress, and future of evolved plastic artificial neural networks
Biological plastic neural networks are systems of extraordinary computational
capabilities shaped by evolution, development, and lifetime learning. The
interplay of these elements leads to the emergence of adaptive behavior and
intelligence. Inspired by such intricate natural phenomena, Evolved Plastic
Artificial Neural Networks (EPANNs) use simulated evolution in-silico to breed
plastic neural networks with a large variety of dynamics, architectures, and
plasticity rules: these artificial systems are composed of inputs, outputs, and
plastic components that change in response to experiences in an environment.
These systems may autonomously discover novel adaptive algorithms, and lead to
hypotheses on the emergence of biological adaptation. EPANNs have seen
considerable progress over the last two decades. Current scientific and
technological advances in artificial neural networks are now setting the
conditions for radically new approaches and results. In particular, the
limitations of hand-designed networks could be overcome by more flexible and
innovative solutions. This paper brings together a variety of inspiring ideas
that define the field of EPANNs. The main methods and results are reviewed.

The One with the Feminist Critique: Revisiting Millennial Postfeminism with Friends
In the aftermath of its initial broadcast run, iconic millennial sitcom Friends (NBC, 1994–2004) generated some quality scholarship interrogating its politics of gender. But as a site of analysis, it remains a curious, almost structuring absence from the central canon of the first wave of feminist criticism of postfeminist culture. This absence is curious not only considering the place of Friends at the forefront of millennial popular culture but also in light of its long-term syndication in countries across the world since that time. And it is structuring in the sense that Friends was the stage on which many of the familiar tropes of postfeminism interrogated across the body of work on it appear in retrospect to have been tried and tested. This article aims to contribute toward redressing this absence through interrogation and contextualization of the series’ negotiation of a range of structuring tropes of postfeminist media discourse, and it argues for Friends as an unacknowledged ur-text of millennial postfeminism
Detailed analysis of chick optic fissure closure reveals Netrin-1 as an essential mediator of epithelial fusion:.
Epithelial fusion underlies many vital organogenic processes during embryogenesis. Disruptions to these cause a significant number of human birth defects, including ocular coloboma. We provide robust spatial-temporal staging and unique anatomical detail of optic fissure closure (OFC) in the embryonic chick, including evidence for roles of apoptosis and epithelial remodelling. We performed complementary transcriptomic profiling and show that Netrin-1 (NTN1) is precisely expressed in the chick fissure margin during fusion but is immediately downregulated after fusion. We further provide a combination of protein localisation and phenotypic evidence in chick, humans, mice and zebrafish that Netrin-1 has an evolutionarily conserved and essential requirement for OFC, and is likely to have an important role in palate fusion. Our data suggest that NTN1 is a strong candidate locus for human coloboma and other multi-system developmental fusion defects, and show that chick OFC is a powerful model for epithelial fusion research
Cultural Consumption Through the Epistemologies of the South: 'Humanization' in Transnational Football Fan Solidarities
In 2014, Boaventura de Sousa Santos awoke the global sociological community to the need to privilege ‘humanization’ in the exploration of transnational solidarities. This article presents the cultural consumption of a football club – Liverpool FC – to understand the common ‘love’, ‘suffering’, ‘care’ and ‘knowledge’ that fans who are part of the ‘Brazil Reds’ or ‘Switzerland Reds’ (although not all fans engaged in such communities are ‘from’ Brazil or Switzerland) experience. The argument is that the global North lexicon of social class, ethnicity, gender and, especially, nationality is less significant as starting points for analysis than humanization through shared love, which consolidates Liverpool FC fans’ transnational solidarities. Accordingly, the article calls for the epistemologies of the global South to be used to understand the practices of cultural consumption that constitute activities in the sphere of everyday life, such as those involved in ‘love’ for a football club
